2013: Honorary Degrees

Wake Forest awarded five honorary degrees during its commencement ceremony May 20. The morning ceremony featured a speech by television journalist Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of “Washington Week” and senior correspondent for the “PBS NewsHour.”

Following her address to more than 1,600 graduates, Ifill was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters during the graduation ceremony.

Carolyn Y. Woo, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, delivered the Baccalaureate Address in Wait Chapel on May 19. She received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters during the graduation ceremony.

The late Michael A.J. Farrell, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Annaly Capital Management and, who along with his wife Mary was the lead donor to Farrell Hall, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws.

Janet Murguia, president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza, the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws. Murguia was the speaker for the School of Business hooding ceremony May 19.

David S. Wilkes, executive associate dean for research affairs at Indiana University School of Medicine, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science. Wilkes was the speaker for the School of Medicine hooding ceremony May 19.
