1988: Law School

Duane D. Daggett, a distinguished lawyer and executive-in-residence at Appalachian State University, was the speaker for the School of Law 14th annual hooding ceremony on May 15 at Wait Chapel.

Daggett is the father of law school graduates David (’85), Denise (’86) and Dawn (’88). He has served in executive management positions with the Fruehauf Corp., Beatrice Companies Inc., and R.J. Reynolds Industries.

“Part of the legacy from our generation to yours is one of the constant pressure of time,” he said. He urged them to see beyond the veneer of time and not to rush life.

Daggett told graduates that they will be confronted with tough decisions involving moral and ethical dilemmas. “Ethical mathematics is emphasized in the legal profession — one from 1,000 is not 999. In ethical mathematics, it’s zero. you can do 1,000 good things, and one wrong, and all the good will be forgotten.” He urged students to sell their energy, their creativity, their time and their services, but never their integrity.
